The Event The Mini Workshop on Singularities, Geometry and Differential Equations, created by the singularity group of the Departamento de Matemática, ICMC-USP, São Carlos, had its first edition in 1999. Organized annually until 2002 at the ICMC-USP, it became since then a biennual meeting organized on odd numbered years. In 2015 it was held in Fortaleza and in 2017 in Niterói, now with the status of an itinerant event. In the even numbered years, since 2002, the singularity group of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) organizes the Workshop on Algebraic Singularity Theory.
In alternated years, these two workshops are part of the activities of the summer programs of the organizing institutions.
In 2017, the UFF hosted the Mini Workshop, and exceptionally the VIII Workshop on Algebraic Singularity Theory and the 11o Mini Workshop on Singularities, Geometry and Differential Equations held at the same time in Niterói, to celebrate the 70th birthday of Abramo Hefez.
The Mini Workshop aims to promote the interaction among Brazilians researchers working in singularities and related areas and to give young researchers an oportunity to exchange ideas and present their research results. Undergraduate and postgraduate students have an oportunity to know different research directions in singularity theory. In recent years the number of foreign participants is increasing. The Singularity Group at ICMC-USP, São Carlos The Instituto de Ciências Matemáticas e de Computação (ICMC) of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is dedicated to higher education and research in Mathematics and Computer Science. It is located in São Carlos, a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The singularity theory group at ICMC-USP was founded by Gilberto Loibel in the 70's and grew thanks to the enthusiasm and determination of his students, especially the late Luiz Antonio Favaro and of Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas. Today it counts on 11 permanent members of academic staff, 6 MSc students, 20 PhD students and 6 Post-docs. The group receives regular academic visits from mathematicians from within and outside Brazil.
